Token Limit Reached: What It Means
"Token limit reached" means the conversation, or the reply, has hit the maximum amount of text the model can handle at once, measured in tokens. A token is a small chunk of text. The usual fix is to start a fresh chat with a short summary of where you left off. Sometimes the message is really a usage limit, which just means waiting.
What does "token limit reached" mean?
Language models do not read letters or whole words. They read tokens. Every message you send, every reply, and any file you attach takes up tokens.
A model can only hold so many at one time. That space is called the context window. When your conversation fills it, the model has no room left. Depending on the app, you may be told the chat is too long, or older parts may be dropped.
We have a separate explainer on this: What is a context window?
What is a token?
A token is a piece of text. It might be a short word, part of a longer word, a number, or a bit of punctuation. In English, a token is often a bit less than a full word.
You do not need exact counts. The takeaway is that long messages, pasted documents, and long chats all use up the budget faster than you would expect.
Which limit did you hit?
People say "token limit" for a few different things:
- Context limit. The whole conversation is too long for the model to hold. Fix: start a new chat.
- Output limit. A single reply was cut off because it hit a maximum length. Fix: ask it to continue, or ask for the answer in parts.
- Usage or rate limit. You have used your allowance for a period. Fix: wait, or change plans if that is an option.
The wording matters. A message about a long conversation is a context problem. A message about messages remaining or trying again later is a usage problem.
What does it mean in Claude or ChatGPT?
Both products can tell you that a conversation has gotten too long, and both can limit how much you can use in a given period. The exact messages, sizes, and limits vary by product, model, and plan, and they change over time.
Because of that, we will not quote numbers here. Check the help page for the product you use for current limits. The fixes below work in either.
What should you do when you hit it?
- Ask for a summary. Before you leave, ask the model to summarize the key facts, decisions, and open questions.
- Start a new chat. Paste the summary in as the first message.
- Re-attach only what you need. Do not paste the whole document again if one section will do.
- Ask for the rest in parts. If a reply was cut off, say "continue" or split the task up.
- Check which limit it was. If it was a usage limit, a new chat will not help. Wait for it to reset.
How do you avoid hitting it?
- Keep chats to one topic. A new task gets a new chat.
- Trim what you paste. Include the relevant part, not the whole file.
- Summarize as you go. A running summary beats a 200-message scroll.
- Be specific. Short, clear prompts waste fewer tokens than long rambling ones.
- Keep a notes file. For long projects, store goals and decisions outside the chat and paste them in when needed.
FAQ
Does starting a new chat lose my work? You lose the model's view of the old conversation, not your saved work. Bring a summary with you.
Why did the model forget what I said earlier? In a very long chat, older parts can fall out of what the model can use, or get less attention. A fresh start with a summary helps.
Is a bigger context window always better? More room helps, but a very full window can still be slow, costly, or less focused. Short and clean often wins.
Is token limit the same as message limit? No. A token limit is about how much text fits. A message or usage limit is about how much you can use in a period of time.

That was the explainer. If you also want to wear the feeling, the Token Limit Reached Hoodie is printed on demand. Hoodies here run $59 to $64.
It is a joke for people who have been mid-thought when the chat ran out. It has no context limit. It is a hoodie.
